Lines
Short Contemporary Dance Film
You can color outside the lines. But please read between the lines. Blurred lines. Down the line. A connection line. Online. Hold the line. A borderline. Crossing the line. Waiting in line. Sniffing a line. Fishing line. Stretch across the equator line. Pipe water, gas & electricity line. A family line. Out of line. A cord, rope, wire, string line. Outline. Along these lines… The black lines in a row inside Olympic-sized pool – lane lines. Track lines on stadiums. Where do we draw the line?
Exploring the figurative interpretations of the word Lines, alongside modern-day expressions that reflect our societal norms and cultural paradigms, like those mentioned above, led me to a profound revelation: aren’t we all trapped in an endless cycle of chasing our thoughts, participating in mindless competition, measuring ourselves against others and comparing our lives, pursuing arbitrary goals, yet rarely question who’s establishing these standards and what’s their purpose. Who’s running this race, why and ultimately where is it going?
Featuring three performers competing against each other, racing through space and time, the video explores how often we get caught up in utterly pointless contests, constantly striving to outperform others instead of finding contentment in our own journey. Do achievements define our worth? Does ambition validate our existence? Is life truly a race or merely an empty cycle?
Limn the surroundings with gaffer tape, from three distinct hues to a few deep narratives about rivalry and scrutiny, ‘Lines’ showcases rapid excitement, blazing trajectories and shifting bodies in a short-lived motion until complete exhaustion.
